“Try forgiving yourself.” This is sound advice that is easier said than done. The power of forgiveness can help us overcome self-doubt and achieve personal growth, but how do we tap into this mindset? We need to forgive ourselves for past mistakes. No one else is going to do this for us. Sure, others may say, “I forgive you,” but those kind words can only be honored from within. In that case, let’s take the time to improve forgiving ourselves, right here, right now.

Understanding Forgiveness

Forgiveness may be one of the most mature practices we undertake. To forgive means we are leaving the past behind so that our present and future are better! Now, that’s a healthy dose of maturity coming in the form of self-love. Forgiveness is a sign of strength. Think about how much effort it takes to be okay and even optimistic about a situation when pain, misunderstanding, and humility are wrapped up in it.

Understanding that forgiveness is tied to compassion is the game-changer in freeing us of our self-deprecation. Read that again! Yes! When we let go of the wrong-doing that has entangled our lives, we learn to accept reality as it is. Then, slowly, we begin to see these moments that have anchored us to our faults turn into something new. Before we forgive, we see these moments as spiky and harmful things.
